The practice of Bhavana

Many of the residents in a big city like New York suffer from anxiety or depression and it may partly be because the mind often tends to be rooted in the past, or in the future, but not nearly enough in the present.

The Buddha said Bhavana or mental development, sometimes loosely translated as "meditation", is the most important activity in which one may engage. Bhavana is the remedy for the untrained mind. Bhavana can be practiced anytime, anywhere. It is not exclusive to the meditation "cushion". As long as the mind is present, it is being developed for meditation.

Meditation is an elevated state of mind. It is only after the mind has been trained and developed that a meditative state may arise. When we sit on the cushion, what we are practicing is Bhavana, not meditation. The mind is filled with taints, defilements and other unwholesome qualities. These unwholesome mental states must be diminished before the mind can be ready for meditation.
